By Jeanie Plyler The OD Pavilion Social & Shag Club is a family of friends that loves, cares, embraces and lifts up its members, the state dance and the music, known as "The Pavilionaires". OD Pavilion Social & Shag Club meets at the Ocean Drive Pavilion, the last open air pavilion on the east coast. Saturday and Sunday afternoons will find the ODPSSC at The Pavilion dancing, socializing and enjoying the music, the dance and life. H. Lee Brown, operator of The Pavilion and Sunset Grill, has a long history with The Pavilion and the OD Pavilion Social & Shag Club with weddings, celebrations of life, reunions and Sunday morning church services. The Boys in the Band, an organization for supporters of the lifestyle and a highly coveted membership, is held once a year when new honorees are inducted. Monthly socials, birthday dances, cake and hugs are freely distributed. Also offering free beginner shag lessons are Earl and Bev Robinson. Members of the Shag Hall of Fame are both here and in Virginia. Shag workshops will be offered every day at The Pavilion and private lessons are also available. House DJs are longtime members Jerry Burrage and Claude Collins as well as the beloved bartender, Miss Mary Dunn, who coined the phrase "The Pavilionaires". Jeanie Plyler, a local artist with Pavilion themed original oil paintings and prints, has her paintings auctioned by H. Lee Brown during the SOS Fall Migration which starts Sept. 13 and runs for 10 days. Monty Lee, a professional photographer since 1972, is around taking pictures for the ODPSSC and The Pavilion as well as other events. The Pavilion also hosts any number of other events such as the Sonny’s Reunion in honor of the previous pavilion. OD Pavilion Social & Shag Club is a club that is growing and welcomes new members. Come down and see for yourself. All shaggers are invited to spend some time on the dance floor that has been around for more than 50 years and where many famous people have danced.
